What Would I Do Without You?

Peter hurried out of his office, accidently knocking over files on Lacy’s desk. He didn’t pause to help or even notice. Lacy chuckled and shook her head. As she reorganized the files, she counted backward in her head from ten. At the count of three, she grinned.

Peter rushed back into the office, panting. “I forgot my keys.”

Lacy tried not to laugh, but it was the third time that week, and it was only Tuesday.

He grabbed a set of keys off the desk and rushed back out to his car. He honked and waved as he passed the front window of the real estate office.

Lacy’s smile faded as she contemplated her next move. It wasn’t going as she had hoped. Six months and he showed no signs that he even noticed her. She knew where he was running off to – to see her. The woman that kept him away from Lacy. Oh, he was coy about it. Pretended to be showing houses, but she knew the truth. How could she not? He had not sold a house in six months. He was cheating on her and would pay. One way or another, he would pay.

Peter arrived back at the office an hour later. “Please, come into my office and we’ll get the paperwork signed.”

A young, beautiful woman followed him to his office. Lacy smiled, while staring her down like a hungry hyena. “Could someone bring in two coffees, please?”

The thought of serving his mistress made her skin crawl. If that was how he wanted to play, she would have to up the ante. Lacy stood up, removed all her clothing, and strutted into his office.

Peter and the woman didn’t even acknowledge her as she entered. That was the last straw. He would pay like all the others had paid, and his mistress would too. The young woman shivered and ran a hand through her long hair trying to settle her nerves.

“Here’s your coffee, Mr. Upton.” An assistant walked past Lacy and set two cups of coffee on his desk. “I don’t know how you like it ma’am, so I brought some sugar and creamer.”

Peter looked up and smiled. “Ah, thanks, Emily. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Emily blushed. “Thanks, Mr. Upton. Just trying to help since Lacy…well. Holler if you need anything.”

The young woman raised her eyebrows and shifted her mouth trying to decide if she was going to ask. What harm could it do? “Um, I don’t mean to pry, but it seems like you are an employee short. Would you be looking for help?

“What! Oh, I see! It’s not enough for you to sleep with my man! Now you want to screw him here in the office too!” Lacy grew furious and screamed obscenities at them.

Peter looked at the young woman and took a deep breath. “Actually, I am. My secretary committed suicide last month and I haven’t found anyone yet.” He leaned back in his chair and tapped the leasing application. “You wouldn’t be looking, would you?”

“I can start tomorrow!”

Peter laughed. “Alright then, the job’s yours. Um, just one thing.” He paused and wiped his face.

“You’re not afraid of ghosts are you?”
