Their Last Performance

Their time had come. They all knew it would be their last performance. Perhaps it would be the last time they ever saw each other. Backstage was somber and quiet. He couldn’t let them go out like that. He gave them the best performance of his life. A standing ovation.

This was written for 50 Word Thursday. When I first saw this picture on Pixabay I was both happy and sad but didn’t know why. When Kristian said it reminded him of the emcee in Cabaret it clicked. It does. Something about the picture elicits memories of Cabaret. I love that work except for the ending. It is so sad. Everyone we had come to love and know would end up in a concentration camp. It is a little known tidbit of history that many performers were seen as defective.
